The paper test, and what the answer means
Cold oven, door open. Close it onto a strip of paper — a till receipt is ideal — and pull. A seal doing its job grips; you feel the drag. Repeat at both top corners, both bottom corners and the middle of each side. Wherever the paper slides out freely is where the heat is leaving. Write down which points failed: that pattern alone separates a flattened seal from a door that has dropped, and those are two different repairs.
What the leak is costing meanwhile
A failing seal shows up everywhere except at the seal. Preheats stretch. The door top and the joinery above it take heat they were never drawn for, and painted cabinet faces discolour long before anyone blames the seal. Browning goes uneven because the cavity is working against a draught. The oven is not broken; it is working harder than it should and putting the difference into the room.
Fitting one is not a drawer-of-spares job
Whether the seal beds into the cavity or onto the door depends on the appliance; establishing which is part of the visit. Either way the corners set the fit: a seal stretched to reach one will fail at that same corner again. The door is checked for square afterwards: a seal crushed down one side is usually telling you about a hinge.
